Photo Ample Solar, CC0Cabin power
Battery, panel and inverter, and how much you actually need.
What you need
- A deep cycle battery, lithium or AGM
- A solar panel and a charge controller
- An inverter sized to your load
- Fuses and proper cable
- A meter on the bank
How
- Add up what you run in a day in watt hours: watts times hours for each thing. Lights and a phone are pennies. A fridge, a pump and a kettle are the whole bill.
- Size the battery for two or three days with no sun, not one.
- Size the panel to replace what you take out on a short cloudy winter day, not on a June afternoon.
- Fuse every line at the battery. Battery cable that shorts with no fuse starts a fire in seconds.
- Run heavy loads on DC straight off the battery where you can. An inverter costs you power just being switched on.
- Watch the meter. Guessing is how batteries get killed.
Watch for
Danger
- Lead batteries pulled below half charge die early.
- Lithium must not be charged below freezing.
- Propane and any flame need real ventilation and a carbon monoxide detector.
- A generator runs outside, never in a porch or a shed against the cabin.
Notes
Get the loads down before you buy panels. Efficient lights and a good cooler beat another panel on the roof.
