Compass
The phone's own sensor, pointing to magnetic north. Keep it flat and away from steel and the truck. Your map's declination still applies. A real compass beats this one.
My location
GPS works with no cell signal. Read it slowly: latitude first, then longitude. Outside, away from the truck, it gets closer.
SOS light and Morse
The whole screen goes white. Turn the brightness right up. Tap the screen to stop. SOS is three short, three long, three short, over and over.
Sunrise, sunset, daylight left
Worked out on the phone for St. John's. Read your location above and it works it out for where you stand.

Hypothermia stages
| What you see | Stage | Do |
|---|---|---|
| Shivering, awake, talking sense | Mild, about 35 to 32 °C | Out of the wind and wet, dry layers, hat, food and warm sweet drinks. |
| Confused or drowsy, shivering may stop | Moderate, about 32 to 28 °C | Handle gently, keep flat, wrap fully with a vapour barrier, heat at the chest and armpits, get rescue coming. |
| Unconscious | Severe, about 28 to 24 °C | Keep flat, handle gently, wrap, call for rescue now. Check breathing for a full minute. |
| No signs of life | About 24 °C and below | Start CPR and get rescue coming. People this cold have lived through long CPR. |
- Shivering that stops in a cold person is a bad sign, not a good one.
- Rough handling of a badly cold person can stop the heart. Keep them flat.
- Cut wet clothes off only once they are covered from the cold.
