The berries worth filling a bucket with, and the rule that keeps you safe.
Worth picking
- Partridgeberry, the low red one on the barrens, best after the first frost
- Blueberry, on open burnt over ground and the barrens, late summer
- Bakeapple, the amber one out on the wet bog, a short season, mostly July
- Raspberry, along old cut lines and edges
- Marshberry, on the bog, sharp, good mixed into the rest
How
- Pick when the berry comes off with no fight. Anything you have to pull is not ready.
- Work one patch out before you wander. They grow in patches, not spread out.
- Keep the leaves and stems out as you pick. Cleaning them at the table costs more time than picking them did.
- Partridgeberries keep for weeks cold and freeze with no work at all.
- Bakeapples do not keep. Deal with them the day you pick them.
Watch for
Danger
- Never eat a berry you have not identified with certainty. There are white and red berries here that will make you sick.
- Bog is soft and it hides holes and old cuts.
- Where the berries are in the fall, so are the bears feeding on them. Make noise.
Notes
If you are not sure of it, do not eat it. There is no field test that beats knowing the plant on sight.
