The fastest roof over your head with a tarp and a length of cord.
What you need
- A tarp, 8 by 10 or bigger
- 25 feet of paracord
- Six pegs, or six stakes you carve
- A knife
How
- Put your back to the wind. Pick a spot with nothing dead hanging over it.
- Run a ridge line between two trees at chest height, tight enough that it hums when you flick it.
- Lay the tarp over the line so the back wall drops all the way to the ground behind you.
- Peg the back edge down hard.
- Pull the front edge out and up to about 45 degrees and peg it.
- Bank the back edge with snow, moss or deadfall to cut the draft.
- Build the fire out front, past the drip line, so the heat bounces off the back wall onto you.
Watch for
Danger
- A flat roof pools rain and then dumps the lot on you.
- Standing dead trees drop limbs in wind.
- Cold comes up out of the ground faster than it comes out of the air. Get boughs, a pad or dry leaves under you.
Notes
If the tarp is small, drop the ridge line to knee height and sleep with your feet to the fire.
