Wolf Wilds › Signals and Rescue
Photo Badan Nasional Pencarian dan Pertolongan, Public domainGetting found
Whistle, mirror, fire and beacon, and what searchers are actually looking for.
What you need
- A pealess whistle on your zipper
- A signal mirror
- A headlamp
- Bright fabric or a space blanket
- A satellite beacon or messenger if you carry one
How
- Stop moving as soon as you know you are lost. People who wander get found late.
- Set the beacon off early if you have one. That is what it is for.
- Three of anything means help. Three whistle blasts, three shots, three fires in a triangle. Repeat every few minutes and listen between.
- Work the mirror on any aircraft, boat or ridge line. Flash toward the sound even when you cannot see it.
- Get colour and shape out in the open. A space blanket on the ground, bright clothing on a bough, a shape nature does not make.
- Keep a smoky fire ready. Green boughs on a hot base put up a column by day, and flame is what they see at night.
Watch for
Danger
- A whistle carries far past your voice and costs you nothing to blow.
- A phone with no bars still burns battery hunting for a tower. Airplane mode holds the charge, and it still shoots video with a time stamp.
- Searchers work daylight. Be visible at first light, not just at dusk.
Notes
Tell somebody where you are going and when you will be back before you leave. That one habit finds more people than every piece of kit put together.
