Where the water is when there is none in front of you.
What you need
- Something that holds water
- Cloth
- Patience
How
- Go downhill. Water runs down and collects in the low ground and at the foot of slopes.
- Follow the green. A line of alder or a strip of brighter growth across a hillside usually has water under it.
- Listen at first light and at dusk when the wind drops. Running water carries a long way in still air.
- Watch the animals and the bird lines morning and evening.
- Dig a hole a foot down beside a dry brook bed, on the outside of a bend, and let it seep in and settle.
- Set out anything that catches rain and run a tarp corner into a container. Rain is the easiest water you will ever get.
Watch for
Danger
- Still water in a bog or a beaver pond needs treating, and so does the clear brook.
- Brackish water at the coast is not water. It costs you more than it gives.
- Eating snow cold takes more heat out of you than the water is worth. Melt it.
Notes
On this island the trouble is almost never finding water. It is treating it.
