The tall marsh plant with the brown seed head. Something to eat in every season, and fluff that catches a spark.
What you need
- A knife
- A bag or two
- Gloves, and boots for the mud
- Clean water to wash what you pick
- A pot if you plan to cook it
How
- Find a stand of cattails at a marsh, a pond edge or a slow brook. Be certain of the plant. See Plants to leave alone.
- In spring, pull the young shoots from the base. Peel off the outer leaves and eat the white core, raw or cooked.
- In early summer, cut the green flower spikes before they turn brown. Boil them and eat them like corn on the cob.
- When the top spike turns yellow with pollen, bend it into a bag and shake. The pollen mixes into flour for bannock.
- In fall and winter, dig the roots out of the mud. Wash them, crush them in water and let the starch settle to the bottom.
- Pull the fluff from a dry brown head for tinder. It flares fast, so have kindling ready. See Fire without matches.
- Cut the long dry leaves in fall for weaving mats or stuffing a bed.
Do and don't
Do
- Pick from clean water only. Cattails take up whatever is in the water around them.
- Wash and cook anything from a marsh you are not sure of.
- Take a little from each stand and leave the rest.
Don't
- Do not pick along roads, in ditches by farm fields, or near a dump or a mine.
- Do not eat any plant you cannot name for certain.
- Do not pick shoots where iris grows mixed in with the cattails.
Watch for
Danger
- Blue flag iris grows in the same wet ground and its young leaves look much like cattail shoots. Iris is poisonous. Pick only where last year's brown cattail heads still stand, and check every shoot.
- A lit puff of fluff can drift away into dry grass. Light it low, in a fire pit.
- Marsh edges can be soft and deep. Test the ground with a stick before you step.
Notes
Cattails grow across Newfoundland and Labrador in marshes, bog edges, ditches and slow streams.
The fluff also stuffs a mitt or a boot for warmth in a pinch.
